I am writing to ask that you and your colleagues work to help provide education to refugee children and children in conflict globally. I have been blessed with access to education in our nation, and I believe that all children and teens deserve access to quality education everywhere in order to ensure healthy development and self-sufficiency. 

 

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) is the first legal instrument that recognized education as a human right in Article 26, declaring, “Everyone has the right to an education.” The Declaration of Human Rights represents universal moral values and basic rights that are inherent to all people. I believe that our nation has a moral obligation to work to grant these rights to all, especially those who have the least access to the necessary resources.

 

There are two pieces of legislation I hope you will support in order to ensure quality education is handed to all people across the continuum of statehood and status.  The first is H.R. 5210, The Refugee Protection Act which calls for the strengthening of regional humanitarian responses, one of which being access to accurate information, legal services, and education. The second is S. 1071, The Keeping Girls in Schools Act which authorizes USAID to acquire funding and enter agreements to enable girls in vulnerable populations to stay in school.
